Every Australian public school system has secured a long-term federal education funding agreement, with Victoria becoming the final state to sign on last week 1. These agreements commit all public schools to reach 100% of their needs-based funding benchmark by 2034 1.
Under the funding arrangements, the federal government will contribute 25% of education costs, with states providing 75% of funding, except in the Northern Territory where the split is 40-60 1. Over the next decade, the federal government will provide approximately $16 billion in additional funding, followed by around $50 billion in the subsequent ten years 1. However, the benefits of full funding will not arrive equally across the country. New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia must wait until 2034 to achieve complete funding for their students, meaning two generations of students will complete their schooling in under-resourced systems 1. In contrast, the Australian Capital Territory, Western Australia, and Tasmania are already at full funding levels 1. Victoria currently funds 70.43% of its schools' needs and will increase this to 75% by 2031 1.
Education Minister Jason Clare highlighted the urgency of closing educational gaps, noting that over the past 15 years, the reading gap between eight-year-olds from wealthy and disadvantaged families has doubled 1. By ninth grade, students with parents who have completed higher education are approximately six years and eight months ahead of their peers whose parents did not complete secondary education 1.
