Li Ji, a pioneering Chinese archaeologist, embarked on a mission to vindicate Chinese prehistory by challenging Western scholars' claims that Yangshao culture originated from abroad. 1 On February 5, 1926, Li Ji and Yuan Fuli initiated a systematic survey from Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, across southern Shanxi. 1
On March 24, 1926, the two archaeologists discovered an ancient site in Xiyin Village, Xiaxian County, Shanxi, during their search for the legendary tombs of Xia Dynasty rulers. 1 Subsequent excavations at the location unearthed significant artifacts, including Xiyin pottery patterns and half of a silkworm cocoon, marking the beginning of China's modern independent archaeological work. 1 The Xiyin site proved extensive, spanning several acres and substantially larger than previously discovered remains at Jiaotouhe. 1
Li Ji established a defining principle for archaeological practice in China, declaring that "archaeological work conducted in Chinese territory must be carried out in cooperation with Chinese archaeological organizations, and antiquities excavated in China must remain in China." 1 This excavation and philosophical commitment laid the groundwork for China's archaeological independence and sovereignty over its cultural heritage.
