International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva visited Buenos Aires and declared that Argentina has significantly strengthened its capacity to service its debt obligations under President Javier Milei's austerity policies and economic reform agenda.[1] Georgieva is the first IMF leader to visit Buenos Aires in eight years.[1]
Argentina, which holds the largest debt burden to the IMF with approximately $58 billion in outstanding loans, has demonstrated marked economic improvement in recent months.[1] The country's annual inflation rate has fallen sharply from 210 percent at the end of 2023 to 33 percent.[1] Argentine bond prices have risen accordingly, and multiple credit rating agencies have recently upgraded the nation's sovereign credit rating, with Moody's joining previous upgrades by S&P and Fitch.[1]
Georgieva stated that no additional IMF funding disbursements will be needed before the 2027 presidential election.[1] She expressed optimism about Argentina's trajectory, noting that "we may be on a good track to have Argentina join the club of emerging markets that borrowed, reformed their economy, and stopped borrowing."[1] Beginning in September, Argentina will commence repayment of the principal on its IMF loans.[1]
