Researchers at the University of Bonn have successfully transformed blood cells from an 80-year-old donor into neural stem cells with a molecular age below 20, reversing more than six decades of cellular aging 1. The team employed direct transcription factor reprogramming to convert erythroid progenitor cells into neural stem cells, bypassing the pluripotent stem cell stage, with the rejuvenation process spanning over 100 days 1. Within 50 days, the cells demonstrated a significant decline of approximately 60 years in molecular age, as tracked using epigenetic clocks 1.
The findings were published in Aging Cell in October 2026, volume 25, issue 10 1. This research provides a new experimental model for understanding the mechanisms of cellular aging and developing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases 1. The study was supported by funding from the European Union Horizon 2020 program, the German Research Foundation (DFG), and the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFRT), with collaboration from the University of Bonn Hospital, the University of Bonn, and Aachen University of Technology 1.
