Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS, have become pervasive environmental and health contaminants due to their widespread use in non-stick products and firefighting foams 1. The chemicals have been linked to reproductive, developmental, cancer, and immune system problems 1. A significant portion of the U.S. population carries detectable levels of these substances: 89% of Americans have PFAS concentrations exceeding 2 nanomoles per milliliter in their blood, while 9% surpass the 20 nanomoles per milliliter risk threshold 1.
Researchers are developing diverse approaches to address the contamination challenge. Destructive methods, including electrochemical degradation, show promise in laboratory settings—this technology has destroyed more than 90% of PFAS mass during testing and has been licensed by engineering consulting firm AECOM 1. Capture-based techniques such as foam fractionation represent an alternative removal strategy 1. The scope of the challenge is substantial, as more than 12,000 PFAS compounds currently exist, yet cleanup research has focused on only a small subset of these 1.
Policy measures are complementing technological efforts. The EPA's voluntary programs for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) conducted between 2010 and 2015 achieved a 95% reduction in water discharge 1. Several states have enacted restrictions on PFAS-containing products: Minnesota, Maine, and New Mexico have all passed bans targeting items such as cookware and dental floss 1.
