Li Huifang, the owner of Heshi Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui, Gansu Province, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after more than 200 children were poisoned through toxic coatings and lead-contaminated food.1 The investigation revealed that kitchen staff used industrial paint to color meals in an attempt to make dishes more appealing to students.1 As a result, 247 children and employees at the facility were found to have abnormal blood lead levels.1
The contaminated food items included steamed red date cakes with lead levels of 1,052 mg/kg and corn sausage rolls with 1,340 mg/kg—both exceeding China's national food safety standard of 0.5 mg/kg by approximately 2,000 times.1 A total of 235 children received treatment for lead poisoning after consuming these items.1 In addition to Li's sentence, executive director Zhi Jinglin received 15 years imprisonment and a fine of 300,000 yuan, while four kitchen workers were sentenced to between 6 and 8 years in prison.1 Li's personal assets were also confiscated totaling 500,000 yuan.1 Multiple provincial officials and hospital staff members were investigated for attempting to conceal the incident, including allegations of tampering with blood test results and accepting bribes.1
