The BBC has scrapped plans to build a dedicated recording studio for the 75-year-old radio drama The Archers at a Birmingham tea factory, as part of wider cost-cutting measures totaling £500 million.1 The decision has prompted more than 100 current and former cast members, editors, writers, and union representatives to write to the BBC Director-General, urging the corporation to maintain production of the show in the Birmingham area to preserve both its production quality and local connections.1
Judi Dench, who appeared in the series in May 1989 for its 10,000th episode as character Pru Forrest, has joined the appeal.1 The BBC indicated that the production team will continue operating from its existing Mailbox office and had originally planned to relocate to the tea factory site in early 2028.1 In response to the cancellation, the corporation is now evaluating existing recording studio facilities across the UK and external recording options within the West Midlands region as more cost-effective alternatives.1
