Five United Nations agencies have issued an emergency appeal for coordinated action to combat a severe malnutrition crisis affecting 15 countries worldwide.1 More than 30 million children are suffering from acute malnutrition, commonly known as wasting, with 8 million of them experiencing severe wasting—the most life-threatening form of malnutrition.1 Children with severe wasting face a mortality risk 12 times higher than well-nourished children.1
The affected countries span multiple regions, including Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Yemen.1 The crisis stems from multiple interconnected factors: ongoing conflicts, climate-related shocks, prolonged impacts of COVID-19, and rising living costs.1 The five UN agencies involved—the Food and Agriculture Organization, UN Refugee Agency, UNICEF, World Food Programme, and World Health Organization—are calling for accelerated implementation of a global action plan for child wasting.1 This multisectoral approach aims to prevent, detect, and treat acute malnutrition in countries experiencing conflict and natural disasters.1
