The World Health Organization, in collaboration with Guinea's Ministry of Health and international partners including Médecins Sans Frontières and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, is set to begin a Phase III clinical trial of the VSV-EBOV Ebola vaccine on March 7, 2015, in the Basse region of Guinea.1 The vaccine, developed by the Public Health Agency of Canada, will be tested using a ring vaccination strategy modeled on the smallpox eradication campaigns of the 1970s, with initial immunizations administered to contacts of confirmed Ebola cases in the hardest-hit areas.1
The trial represents a critical step toward developing the first preventive tool against Ebola in human history.1 The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization approved $300 million in funding for the initiative in December 2014, with an additional $90 million allocated for vaccine deployment.1 According to WHO Director-General Margaret Chan, if the vaccine proves effective, "it will become the first Ebola prevention tool in human history."1
