Hundreds of French supermarkets fell victim to a coordinated cyber attack that compromised refrigeration equipment and destroyed millions of euros worth of perishable goods.1 Hackers infiltrated the cold-chain management software supplied by Danish company Danfoss, deliberately raising temperatures in refrigerators and freezers to 50°C (120°F) throughout the night or for periods lasting up to six hours.1 Approximately 500 stores were affected, representing roughly one-thirtieth of France's 15,000 supermarkets.1 Major retailers impacted included Coopérative U, Intermarché, Netto, Carrefour, Monoprix, and E.Leclerc.1
The scale of the attack varied by chain: Coopérative U reported over 100 compromised locations, while Intermarché and its Netto brand suffered damage across at least 300 stores.1 Carrefour's network of 6,000 stores saw 80 establishments targeted, and Monoprix experienced attacks at more than 5% of its over 400 locations.1 Two supermarkets in the Alsace region alone sustained losses totaling €270,000 (£228,000).1 The compromised equipment consisted of older refrigeration systems incapable of receiving security software updates.1
French prosecutors have launched a cybercrime investigation into the incident.1 European Food Commissioner Christophe Hansen stated that food security demands attention at all levels, noting that "food weaponization has become a reality."1 Dominique Schelcher, chief executive of Coopérative U, characterized the attack as "unacceptable."1
