Australia's Workplace Gender Equality Agency, in collaboration with Curtin University, has released research revealing significant challenges in retaining women in senior positions despite higher promotion rates.1 The study found that while women advance into management roles more frequently than men, they resign at notably higher rates—13.8 percent compared to 12 percent for men—contributing to a persistent gender pay gap.1
The research highlighted that women in Australia earn on average AUD 0.79 for every dollar earned by men, while the gender disparity in leadership remains acute.1 Women account for only one-fifth of board chairs and chief executive officers at major Australian companies.1 In the healthcare and social assistance sector, women comprise 75 percent of the workforce yet hold only approximately 50 percent of CEO positions.1
To address these retention challenges, the agency recommends employers implement flexible work arrangements, including part-time management positions and shared CEO roles.1 Currently, only 13.2 percent of organizations have designed part-time management roles.1 Christina Castellani, Chief Executive of the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, stated: "The deep-rooted belief that management roles cannot be part-time is preventing women from staying in senior positions."1
The research also identified caregiving responsibilities as a significant factor, with 80 percent of primary carers using parental leave being women, and 33 percent of employers offering no additional paid parental leave.1 The study analyzed data from 5.4 million employees during the 2024–25 financial year.1
