Researchers at the Australian Heart Institute plan to conduct a 12-month trial offering 100 healthcare workers at Nepean Hospital in western Sydney 30 minutes of paid exercise breaks during work hours to investigate whether regular physical activity in the workplace can enhance cardiovascular health, mental wellbeing, and job performance.1
The initiative comes as research indicates that physical inactivity costs the Australian economy over 2 billion Australian dollars annually.1 Heart disease affects more than 1 million Australian adults, representing 6.4 percent of the adult population.1 Regular exercise can reduce the risk of heart disease by up to one-third.1
The trial will provide participants with activities including walking, boxing, and virtual reality tennis while monitoring changes in heart health, mental health, depression, burnout, and anxiety levels.1 According to cardiologist Dr. Faraz Pathan, "My dream is for Australia to be the first country to roll out this measure for workers."1
