Brigham Young University researchers have found that exercising together—even something as simple as walking—can enhance communication, improve conflict resolution, and reduce marital stress among couples.1 The study analyzed data from nearly 1,700 married couples and discovered that joint exercise was associated with stronger relationship benefits compared to working out alone.1
The research, published in Family Relations in 2026, drew participants from the CREATE study, a nationally representative sample of young married couples.1 While approximately 60 percent of both husbands and wives reported exercising regularly, only about one-third exercised together.1 Walking emerged as the most commonly reported shared physical activity among couples.1 The findings linked joint exercise to three key relationship health markers: communication quality, conflict resolution ability, and reduced marital stress.1
According to Jeremy Yorgason, a professor in Brigham Young University's School of Family Life and the study's lead researcher, "Joint physical activity promotes the ability to peacefully resolve conflict in small but meaningful ways."1
