An international study by the World Cancer Research Fund has identified a concerning surge in seven cancer types among people under 50 in the United Kingdom, United States, and Netherlands.1 In the UK, prostate cancer diagnoses among men under 50 have increased nearly fourfold since 2001, rising from 1 per 100,000 people to 3.6 per 100,000 by 2023, while colorectal, kidney, and uterine cancers have all doubled.1 In the US, kidney cancer rates increased 2.1-fold between 2000 and 2023, rising from 2.5 per 100,000 to 5.3 per 100,000 people, with colorectal, uterine, and pancreatic cancers growing by more than 50 percent and breast cancer rising by approximately 20 percent.1
Researchers attribute much of this acceleration to modifiable lifestyle factors, including obesity, poor diet quality, and physical inactivity, though they acknowledge that heightened diagnostic awareness has also contributed to rising detection rates.1 According to Giota Mitrou, executive director of the World Cancer Research Fund, the trends are "concerning," particularly given that roughly 40 percent of all cancers are linked to changeable risk factors.1 In response to these findings, King's College London has announced a new trial involving 250,000 participants to investigate colorectal cancer growth in younger adults.1 The UK Department of Health and Social Care has committed to a target of ensuring three-quarters of diagnosed cancer patients are cancer-free or living with cancer by 2035, a goal aimed at saving 320,000 lives.1
