A new diversity study of British children's publishing has revealed significant declines in representation across multiple ethnic groups. Books with Black protagonists fell to just 47 titles in 2025, representing 2.1% of 2,189 published works and marking a 7.8% drop from the previous year 1. This figure starkly contrasts with Black children comprising 8.5% of the UK's child population 1.
The underrepresentation extends across other communities as well. South Asian main characters declined to 1.4% of publications despite that demographic accounting for 12.4% of child readers 1, while Middle Eastern and North African characters appeared in only 3 books—a 50% decrease—despite representing 2.2% of the population 1. Children's books featuring disabled protagonists fell 60% to just 2 titles, both written by authors without disabilities 1. Across all marginalized groups, only 150 books featured minority ethnic, disabled, or neurodivergent main characters, comprising 6.9% of the total, with 37.3% of these authored by creators from different backgrounds 1.
The study did identify some progress in specific areas. Neurodivergent representation in picture books grew from 3 titles in 2024 to 13 in 2025 1, and books featuring marginalized protagonists in the infant category increased by 29.4% 1. However, the three Middle Eastern and North African titles published focused entirely on refugee narratives 1, highlighting the narrow scope of how some communities are portrayed in children's literature.
