The eight massive red lanterns adorning Tiananmen Gate Tower stand as iconic symbols of China's capital, each exceeding two meters in both height and diameter and weighing approximately 80 kilograms.1 These lanterns have graced the tower since October 1, 1949, when they were first installed for the founding ceremony of the People's Republic.1 The lanterns have evolved significantly over the decades; in September 1994, the original fixtures were replaced with modern steel-structured folding-design lanterns, each weighing over 100 kilograms.1
The creation of these monumental lanterns embodies an intricate traditional craft requiring more than a dozen distinct steps.1 Master craftspeople select bamboo aged at least three years, with a two-meter-diameter lantern requiring approximately 40 bamboo strips to construct.1 Guo Yanqing, a 64-year-old practitioner and officially recognized representative inheritor of Beijing lantern craftsmanship at the district level, has devoted 64 years to perfecting this heritage art form.1 The Beijing Arts Red Lantern Factory, where this work continues, traces its origins to the Wensheng Zhai Lantern and Fan Painting Shop founded during the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty, before being formally established as a state enterprise in 1956.1
