China's National Day Golden Week commenced on October 1st, with Hong Kong authorities gearing up to welcome a substantial influx of mainland visitors.1 The Hong Kong government has implemented comprehensive preparations across multiple fronts to manage the anticipated surge in tourism and safeguard visitor experiences.
Last year's National Day Golden Week (October 1–8) drew 1.64 million visitors to Hong Kong, with mainland Chinese tourists accounting for over 1.4 million of that total, and hotels maintaining an average occupancy rate of 90 percent.1 To prevent commercial fraud, Customs authorities are intensifying patrols across major shopping districts including Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, Hung Hom, To Kwa Wan, and Causeway Bay, with particular focus on pharmacies, ginseng and seafood specialty stores, beauty salons, and jewelry shops.1 The government has also reminded tourists to protect their consumer rights during their stay.1
Enhanced transportation capacity has been rolled out across multiple transit routes.1 Railway operators have been instructed to strengthen train services between Hong Kong's Admiralty Station and Shenzhen's Luohu and Lok Ma Chau stations.1 Additionally, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed Railway Hong Kong section and Cross-Harbor Bridge shuttle buses have increased service frequencies.1
Recent performance provides a benchmark for the expected surge: during the mid-autumn festival holiday from September 25–27, Hong Kong received 537,000 visitor arrivals, representing a 19 percent year-on-year increase, with nearly 440,000 of those visitors traveling from mainland China.1
