A study by the Black Dog Institute has identified a key factor in determining the mental wellbeing of high school students: their sense of belonging at school.1 The research tracked over 1,500 eighth-grade students across 35 high schools in New South Wales and found that the strength of students' connection to peers and staff in their eighth-grade year was closely linked to their psychological wellbeing two years later in tenth grade.1
By age 15, Australian students have spent approximately 11,000 hours in school settings,1 making the quality of their school experience particularly significant. The study revealed that while factors such as student-to-teacher ratios, school gender composition, and public or private school status showed no marked correlation with student mental health,1 cultivating genuine connections within the school community proved essential. Schools can strengthen this sense of belonging through whole-school approaches including establishing school connection committees, implementing mentoring programs, and organizing lunchtime activities.1
