An analysis released by investment fund Rebalance Earth has highlighted a critical vulnerability in Britain's food security, revealing that the majority of the country's staple crops are cultivated in regions facing significant water stress.1 Eighty-one percent of England's fresh produce is grown in areas already experiencing water pressure, while 77 percent of wheat, 75 percent of barley, and 74 percent of oilseed rape are produced in regions classified as having medium to extremely high drought risk.1 The report also found that 70 percent of sugar beets and 67 percent of potatoes are located in drought-affected zones, with approximately one-quarter of essential food crops situated in acute drought-risk areas.1 Within these acute-risk zones, the concentration is even more severe: 30 percent of wheat and barley, 28 percent of oilseed rape, and 27 percent of fresh produce face the highest drought exposure.1
The concentration of production in vulnerable regions creates substantial economic implications across the food supply chain.1 According to the analysis, 2026 saw grain harvests in England and Wales described as "disappointing," with wheat, spring barley, and oat yields falling below historical averages.1 Kirsty Wilman noted that "the effects of drought ripple through the entire economy: lower yields, pressure on supply chains and rising prices for everything in our shopping baskets."1 The challenges are exemplified by Elveden Estate, owned by the Guinness family, which experienced drought conditions in three of the past five years despite producing 100,000 tonnes of food annually.1
