The 48th World Skills Competition is being held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, bringing together competitors from across the globe to demonstrate the enduring value of technical expertise.1 The event features 64 competition categories, with 1,385 competitors representing 80 countries and territories taking part in the contest.1
Seven new competition categories have been introduced this year, including rail vehicle technology, unmanned drone systems, intelligent security technology, software testing, and digital interactive media design—reflecting how digitalization and automation are reshaping professional skill requirements.1 According to Shanghai University of Engineering and Technology professor Wang Di, artificial intelligence has not yet become an independent decision-maker or responsible executor capable of field implementation.1 AI cannot autonomously judge whether requirements are legitimate, verify engineering safety, or handle unexpected on-site faults, Wang emphasized.1
The World Skills Organization, established in 1950, now has 90 member countries and territories representing approximately two-thirds of the global population.1 China joined the organization in 2010 as its 53rd member.1 Francis Wuhan, president of the World Skills Organization, noted that every skill demonstrated at the competition reflects years of sustained focus and refinement.1
