Australia's 2026 HILDA longitudinal survey has documented a sharp rise in housing stress across the nation, with multiple indicators pointing to intensifying financial strain on households.1 Among mortgage holders in the five major state capital cities, housing stress—defined as spending more than 30 percent of after-tax income on rent or mortgage payments—climbed from 4.4 percent in 2021 to 10 percent by 2024.1 The situation has deteriorated even more severely in regional areas, where rental stress among tenants increased from 13 percent in 2001 to 29 percent in 2024.1
The pressure is particularly acute for young adults, with half of those aged 18 to 29 now living with their parents, up from 39 percent in 2001.1 Among the youngest cohort aged 18 to 21, the proportion living with parents has reached 85 percent, compared to 69 percent two decades earlier, while for those aged 22 to 25, the figure stands at 48 percent, up from 35 percent in 2001.1 In major capital cities, rental stress among tenants has also worsened, rising to approximately 25 percent in 2024 from about 20 percent in 2001.1 Beyond housing, food insecurity has emerged as another growing concern, affecting 17.9 percent of Australians in 2024, an increase from 13.7 percent in 2020.1
