The cultivated meat sector has descended into crisis after a decade of ambitious expansion and substantial investment. What began as a breakthrough moment in 2013—when Dutch researcher Mark Post unveiled the first laboratory-grown hamburger in London at a cost of $330,000, funded by Google co-founder Sergey Brin—sparked a global investment boom that drew over $3 billion to more than 140 startups worldwide.1 Post's prediction that cultured meat would become a consumer product within ten years ignited widespread optimism across the industry.1
The sector's trajectory has since reversed sharply. Investment funding plummeted from its peak, declining to just $177 million in 2023.1 Political headwinds have intensified as seven U.S. states—Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Indiana, Montana, Nebraska, and Texas—enacted legislation prohibiting or restricting the sale and production of cultivated meat.1 Believer Meats, which had built a 200,000-square-foot facility in Wilson, North Carolina designed to be the world's largest cultured meat production site with an annual capacity of 21 million pounds, filed for bankruptcy and faced a $34 million lawsuit from Gray Construction.1
Consumer adoption remains a fundamental barrier to commercialization. According to the Good Food Institute, only 18 percent of Americans view cultured meat as extremely or very appealing, while nearly 60 percent indicated they were unlikely or very unlikely to purchase it.1 Currently, only one global retailer sells cultivated meat: Huber's Butchery in Singapore, which offers GOOD Meat brand cultured chicken strips for $5.62 per four ounces.1
Some industry participants continue development efforts despite the sector's challenges. Mission Barns cultivates cells from a Yorkshire pig named Dawn over approximately two weeks to produce products containing less than 10 percent animal cells.1 Jeff Bezos's Earth Fund committed $30 million to North Carolina State University to establish the Bezos Center for Sustainable Proteins.1
