The Dikke van Dale, the Netherlands' leading authority dictionary, has incorporated the term "vulvalippen" (vulva lips) into its new online edition, replacing the traditional "schaamlippen" (shame lips).1 Dictionary editor Ton den Boon noted that the new vocabulary is increasingly appearing in media, biology textbooks, medical pamphlets, and veterinary medicine.1
The change reflects a broader European movement to modernize medical terminology related to women's bodies and sexual health. Shari Klein, founder of the Schaamteloos campaign, emphasized that "language shapes how we see ourselves."1 Similar reforms have taken place across the continent: Sweden introduced the term "slidkrans" (vaginal crown) as an alternative to "hymen" in academic dictionaries after 2009,1 while German journalists Gunda Windmüller and Mithu Sanyal launched a petition in 2018 to replace "Shamlippen" with "Vulvalippen."1 In Britain, broadcaster Nicola Denson-Elliott initiated a campaign to change "hysterectomy" to "uterectomy,"1 and the Royal College of Midwives published alternative terminology guidance in 2022.1 Activists argue that removing shame-laden language helps reduce stigmatization of women's bodies and promotes health awareness.
