Zero-gravity seats have emerged as a major marketing feature among new energy vehicle manufacturers, with equipped models surging from 32 in 2022 to 117 by 2024, nearly tripling in just two years 1. However, this rapid adoption masks serious safety risks that the automotive industry has only recently begun to address through regulatory frameworks.
The safety hazards associated with zero-gravity seating are substantial. Occupants in a reclined zero-gravity position face a risk of severe trauma injuries (AIS3+ grade) that is 4.4 times higher than in conventional seating positions, with life-threatening injuries (AIS4+ grade) occurring at 5.2 times the rate 1. During a 50 km/h frontal collision, the impact force on the spine in a zero-gravity position is equivalent to falling from a five-story building 1. The technology has also rapidly penetrated lower price segments, with penetration rates exceeding 5 percent overall 1. Despite these concerns, zero-gravity seats command a 20 to 30 percent cost premium over traditional seats 1.
Recognizing these gaps, regulators have begun establishing safety standards. In May 2025, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released a draft of the mandatory national standard GB 15083, which for the first time imposed safety constraints on large-angle reclining seats 1. The standard specifies that driver seat backrest angles must not exceed 35 degrees 1. When vehicle speed exceeds 80 km/h with a backrest angle greater than 35 degrees, a safety voice warning lasting at least 60 seconds must be activated 1. The current national standard GB 15083-2019 focuses primarily on seat structural strength and passive safety but lacks clear provisions for emerging concerns such as anti-pinching functions in power seats and safety logic in voice control systems 1.
