GLP-1 weight-loss medications have gone viral on social media due to their dramatic slimming effects, yet serious safety questions and gaps in medical insurance coverage are now taking center stage.1 Six weight-loss drugs have received regulatory approval in China, with five belonging to the GLP-1 class: orlistat, liraglutide, benrralutide, semaglutide, tirzepatide, and masdutide.1 However, weight-loss indications remain excluded from the national medical insurance formulary, forcing patients to bear the full cost themselves, amounting to thousands of yuan annually.1
The adverse effects associated with these medications present a growing concern for healthcare professionals.1 Common side effects include dehydration, nausea, headache, diarrhea, depression, acute pancreatitis, gallstones, and retinal disease, with elderly patients facing particular risk of rapid muscle loss when body weight drops too quickly.1 Additionally, the rebound weight gain that occurs after patients stop taking GLP-1 drugs remains unresolved.1 A notable disparity exists in insurance coverage: diabetic patients using semaglutide qualify for medical insurance reimbursement, while those taking the same medication solely for weight loss must pay out of pocket.1
Despite these challenges, the field continues to advance.1 Numerous GLP-1 drugs and dual- and triple-target medications are currently undergoing Phase II and Phase III clinical trials.1 Experts like Zheng Ping, deputy director of the pharmacy department at Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University, view weight management as a frontier in preventing chronic disease.1 China's government designated 2024 as the "Year of Weight Management," signaling renewed policy focus on this health domain.1
