Worcester Polytechnic Institute has received a $3.3 million grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation to lead a five-year research initiative aimed at recovering rare earth elements and critical minerals from coal ash, red mud, and mining tailings using bio-inspired methods.1 The project will employ natural processes involving diatoms, sponges, and plants to convert large quantities of industrial waste into valuable materials while minimizing energy consumption and chemical usage.1
An estimated 11 million tons of rare earth elements trapped in America's coal ash are valued at $8.4 billion, nearly eight times the current domestic primary rare earth reserves of the United States.1 Led by Professor Mingjiang Tao, the research team will incorporate artificial intelligence and biomolecular design to accelerate discovery across the two-stage project.1 Researchers from George Mason University, University of California San Diego, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and University at Buffalo will collaborate on the initiative, which is funded through the National Science Foundation's Growing Convergence Research program.1
