Security researchers have successfully compromised Flock Safety cameras and revealed the extent of their tracking capabilities, disclosing their findings to 404 Media and WIRED.1 The researchers recovered nearly a complete copy of data from a roadside camera and managed to unlock encrypted keys stored on the device, gaining access to thousands of vehicle detection videos.1
The investigation demonstrates that Flock's computer vision software can detect far more than vehicle license plates, identifying people, bicycles, and other objects in addition to vehicles and their features.1 A single passing vehicle can generate dozens of images, and recovered logs from the system showed it had produced over one million images in total.1 The software's capabilities extend to recognizing bumper stickers and graphics on vehicles.1
