The Federal Reserve's policy committee voted unanimously to increase the benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points to a range of 3.75–4.00 percent, marking the first rate hike since July 2023.12313 The Federal Open Market Committee approved the increase by a vote of 12–0.1
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh justified the action by stating that "inflation is too high and has been for too long,"12313 and emphasized that "our primary focus is price stability" and that the policy move "will support the committee's more timely return to the 2 percent target."3 Warsh declined to comment on discussions with President Trump,1 but asserted the Fed operates independently of political pressure.3 Multiple Fed officials expect further rate increases to reach 4.00–4.25 percent by year-end,217 with some projecting rates could climb to 4.25–4.5 percent in 2027 before beginning to decline in 2028 and 2029.17 The central bank has projected that inflation will not reach its 2 percent target until 2029.2
President Trump strongly opposed the rate increase, stating that "rates should be 1 percent or lower" because "we are the most creditworthy country in the world—by far."313 He also criticized the Fed, saying "the Fed Board is very hostile. They are very political. They are doing the wrong thing."3
The rate hike triggered immediate market turbulence. The S&P 500 declined 0.9 percent and the Nasdaq fell 0.5 percent,1 while the Dow Jones index dropped 700 to 850 points.15 Treasury yields rose, with the two-year yield climbing 6 basis points to 4.725 percent and the ten-year yield increasing 1 basis point to 5 percent.1 The ten-year yield reached a 19-year high.2
The rate increase will raise borrowing costs for American consumers. Major U.S. banks including JPMorgan Chase, KeyCorp, and Bank of New York Mellon raised their prime lending rate from 6.75 percent to 7 percent.9 Mortgage interest rates averaged 6.76 percent for 30-year fixed loans and 6.09 percent for 15-year fixed loans,9 signaling higher costs ahead for home purchases and refinancing. Credit card and auto loan rates are also expected to rise.711 Meanwhile, savers may benefit from increased yields on savings accounts and other deposit products.7
Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer responded by warning that "this will make everything more expensive."9
