A study published in Frontiers in Physiology has found that smelling chocolate before and during resistance training enabled participants to complete additional leg extension repetitions without experiencing greater fatigue 1. The research involved 23 healthy men in their early to mid-twenties with moderate training experience who were tested after fasting for at least 10 hours 1.
The strength of the effect varied by chocolate type 1. Dark chocolate with 90% cocoa content produced the most pronounced results, increasing the number of leg extension repetitions by approximately 18, while milk chocolate containing 60% cocoa increased repetitions by around 9 1. Researchers attributed this effect to learned associations and the brain's anticipatory response to food intake 1. When compared to a water control, dark chocolate significantly reduced both hunger sensations and appetite, whereas milk chocolate, though rated as more pleasant by participants, did not produce significant changes in hunger or appetite 1.
The research was led by Mohamed Nashrudin bin Naharudin, an assistant professor at the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Science at the University of Malaya 1, and was published on September 15, 2026 1.
