The 2026 Global Ranking of World-Class Disciplines, released by ShanghaiRanking on September 15, reveals that Chinese mainland universities have expanded their count of globally leading disciplines to 22.1 Chemistry and marine science marked debuts as top-ranked subjects for mainland institutions, with Tsinghua University claiming chemistry and China Ocean University claiming marine science, respectively.1
Tsinghua University leads among Chinese mainland institutions with seven global champion disciplines: chemistry, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, nanoscience and technology, energy science and engineering, and environmental science and engineering.1 This year also marks a historic breakthrough for China Ocean University and Sichuan University, both securing their first-ever global champion disciplines.1
Zhejiang University topped mainland rankings by placing 57 disciplines on the assessment, becoming the world's only institution with full representation across all evaluated subjects.1 The 2026 rankings evaluated more than 3,000 universities worldwide and covered 57 disciplines, with the United States maintaining dominance by leading in 27 subjects.1
