Mark Elliott、Dr. Edwin Johnson和Dr.
An international research team from Cardiff University and Newcastle University has identified a longstanding misconception in chemistry education regarding the nature and scope of inductive effects in organic compounds.1 According to the new findings, textbooks have incorrectly described how inductive effects propagate through molecular structures, with traditional teaching materials claiming the effect diminishes gradually across three to four chemical bonds in neutral molecules, when in reality it extends only to a single adjacent bond.1
The research, published on September 14, 2026, in the Journal of Chemical Education under the title "Revisiting the Nature and Scope of Inductive Effects in Organic Compounds," was conducted by an international team including Dr. Mark Elliott from Cardiff University, Dr. Edwin Johnson from Newcastle University, and Dr. Kasimir Gregory from the University of New England.1 The findings have prompted two British A-level examination boards to announce reviews of how inductive effects are taught in their curricula.1
