Ziquejie Terraces in Xinhua County, Loudi City, Hunan Province, represents over 2,000 years of agricultural heritage spanning more than 80,000 acres of land.1 The terraced landscape, designated as both a Global Important Agricultural Cultural Heritage site and a World Irrigation Engineering Heritage site, winds across mountainous terrain with elevations ranging from 500 to 1,200 meters, featuring gradients exceeding 50 degrees at their steepest points and comprising over 500 individual levels.1
A distinctive feature of the terraces is their ancient self-flowing irrigation system, which operates without relying on ponds, reservoirs, or artificial water channels.1 Instead, the system harnesses naturally occurring groundwater in rock fissures, directing it through an intricate network of channels to sustain the agricultural landscape. Beyond its engineering achievements, the region embodies Meishan culture and hosts three nationally designated intangible cultural heritage items: Xinhua folk songs, Meishan ritual theater, and Meishan martial arts.1
The area also preserves significant historical and culinary attractions. Xiangdong Street, constructed during the Song Dynasty over a thousand years ago, contains more than 200 Ming and Qing Dynasty structures.1 Local specialties include Xinhua triple soup, Baixi tofu, Xinhua black tea, and polygonatum.1
