A federal judge in California's Northern District has dismissed two class-action lawsuits alleging that LinkedIn improperly scanned users' browser extensions.1 U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria ruled on Tuesday that the plaintiffs failed to establish legal standing to bring the claims, as neither alleged that they had installed browser extensions that transmitted private information to LinkedIn.1 The judge noted that users who voluntarily download browser extensions essentially consent to exposing data to websites, stating that "users actively download browser extensions, which by their nature intentionally expose data to websites, so the plaintiffs seem unlikely to be able to allege a cognizable privacy injury."1
The lawsuits were filed separately in April by California residents Nicholas Farrell and Jeff Ganan.1 Though Chhabria granted the plaintiffs permission to amend their complaints, he expressed skepticism about their prospects for success.1 According to J.R. Howell, an attorney representing Ganan, his team is currently evaluating whether to appeal the decision in California state court or before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.1
