China's Commerce Ministry recently summoned representatives of French companies operating in the country to discuss potential impacts of European Union subsidies on the Chinese market.1 Ministry spokesperson Huang Ling stated that some French enterprises have received subsidies from the EU and its member states, and the ministry needs to assess the implications of such support.1
This move reflects escalating tensions between China and the EU over trade practices and industrial overcapacity. The Chinese government has redirected subsidy allegations that have long targeted its own enterprises toward European businesses.1 Huang Ling asserted on September 3 that framing the situation as "economic imbalance" and "overcapacity" is essentially a protectionist tactic.1 EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen countered in July, stating: "We do not want to see unfair competition caused by subsidies in our markets again."1
The dispute has intensified at international forums. During a Group of Twenty finance ministers and central bank governors meeting earlier this month, 19 members agreed to address the issue of "cheap exports," but China opposed the consensus, preventing the group from issuing a joint communiqué.1 Meanwhile, Chinese enterprises received government assistance ranging from three to eight times more than companies in OECD member countries between 2005 and 2024.1
