Several major Chinese carriers have recently introduced paid customizable meal services, prompting widespread questions about the future of complimentary in-flight dining.1 China Eastern Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, and Xiamen Airlines have all rolled out paid meal options for passengers.1
However, customer service representatives from these carriers moved quickly to dispel concerns about elimination of free meals. China Eastern Airlines confirmed that aircraft will continue providing complimentary meals under normal circumstances, though passengers may opt to purchase alternative meals at an additional cost, with each passenger limited to one paid meal request per flight.1 Sichuan Airlines advised that passengers can voluntarily purchase paid meals through its mobile application, with bookings opening ten days before departure and closing forty-eight hours prior to takeoff.1 Xiamen Airlines stated that free meals will be provided for tickets explicitly marked as including meals, while paid dining options remain subject to flight availability.1
These clarifications indicate that the introduction of premium meal choices does not represent a shift away from the traditional free meal service on domestic routes. Passengers retain the choice between complimentary standard meals and newly available paid alternatives.
