China's automobile market displayed a starkly contrasting performance in August, with domestic retail sales plummeting while exports surged. Domestically, broad-based passenger vehicle retail sales dropped to 1.554 million units, marking a year-on-year decline of 23.7%, whereas export volumes reached 894,000 units, representing a 77.5% increase from the same period last year.1
The divergence was particularly pronounced in the new energy vehicle segment. New energy vehicle domestic retail sales reached 1.005 million units but declined 10.1% year-on-year, while export volumes climbed to 518,000 units—a 154.7% surge—driven by manufacturers such as BYD, Geely, and Chery.1 According to the China Passenger Car Association, continued export growth has provided crucial support, helping stabilize wholesale volumes and production capacity for automakers.1 Meanwhile, the automotive industry faced significant margin pressures, with profit margins standing at just 3.6%, substantially below the 6.5% average recorded across downstream industrial enterprises.1
Domestic market challenges stem partly from elevated oil prices, which have dampened fuel vehicle sales and left dealers struggling with survival pressures and eroded confidence.1 Looking ahead, September's market entry into the traditional "Golden September and Silver October" peak consumption season coincides with the government's intensified subsidies for vehicle trade-in programs.1
