Qatar has rejected allegations that it is detaining three Iranian fighter pilots who went missing during military operations in early March.[1] According to Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari, "We clearly deny the claims regarding the detention of Iranian pilots."[1]
The Iranian Armed Forces General Staff's Committee for Missing Persons, led by Mohammad Bagherzadeh, has claimed that pilots Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian, and Omran Behraveshian were captured by Qatari military forces and have been held for six months.[1] Iran stated that the pilots were taken alive during a mission targeting a Qatari military base.[1] However, Qatar confirmed that it shot down two Iranian Sukhoi Su-24 bombers on March 2, though it has not verified whether these aircraft were connected to the missing pilots claimed by Iran.[1] Iran launched the military strikes in late February as part of a broader response to U.S. and Israeli actions in the Middle East, including attacks on American facilities in the Persian Gulf region.[1] Iran has called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to assist in locating the missing personnel.[1]
