The NSW Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority has rejected an application by The Boathouse at Shelly Beach to relax alcohol sales restrictions at the popular Sydney waterfront venue.[1] The proposal sought to allow customers to purchase alcoholic beverages without ordering food, but the regulator determined the change posed unacceptable risks to the local community.[1]
The decision came after a public consultation period that generated 114 formal objections from residents.[1] Concerns raised included potential for late-night antisocial behavior, intoxication, traffic congestion, noise disturbance, and harm to nearby bird habitats.[1] The Manly area already experiences alcohol-related assault rates above average, according to the authority's assessment.[1] ILGA chairwoman Caroline Lamb stated the proposal carried risk of "detriment to the local community."[1]
The Marine Parade Action Alliance, a community group, characterized the area as alcohol-free and opposed the loosening of controls.[1] However, The Boathouse Group noted that neither NSW police nor Northern Beaches Council submitted formal objections to the application.[1] The venue operator indicated it is considering pursuing a review under NSW liquor licensing legislation.[1]
