Ella Hooper, the former frontwoman of 1990s Australian rock band Killing Heidi, has completed a major artistic shift toward American country music at age 43.[1] The musician, who graced the cover of Australian Rolling Stone at just 17 years old in 2000, has recorded her latest album "Overnight Success" in Nashville and will release it on October 2.[1]
Hooper's transition to country music was catalyzed by an unexpected moment during a 2017 yoga retreat in Lombok, when a copy of Rolling Stone's Nashville Special Edition washed ashore.[1] This serendipitous discovery coincided with profound personal losses—her mother died of breast cancer in early January 2022, followed by her father's death weeks later.[1] These circumstances marked a turning point in her artistic trajectory and life direction.
Her country music journey gained substantial recognition with her second solo album "Small Town Temple," which was created in Violet Town during 2020-21 and released in 2023.[1] The album received an Australian Music Prize nomination and topped the Australian country music charts.[1] With "Overnight Success" now set for release, Hooper is considering relocating to Nashville to further establish her presence in the country music scene.[1]
