Moroccan authorities arrested 111 people on Saturday as they sought to cross into the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta [1]. Among those detained, 109 were migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and two were Moroccan citizens [1]. The arrests occurred in or near the Moroccan city of Fnideq, situated along the border with Ceuta [1].
The operation came just two weeks after a mass migration event that saw over 72,000 migrants enter Ceuta, resulting in at least 96 deaths during attempts to reach Europe [1]. In response to the renewed crossing attempts, Spain significantly reinforced its border presence, deploying more than 500 additional police officers to the territory and bringing total police strength in Ceuta to over 1,600 [1]. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska stated: "We will continue deploying the necessary personnel to restore normality as quickly as possible and prevent a repeat of what happened on July 30" [1]. Spain also installed maritime barriers to strengthen its defenses [1].
The Moroccan government had warned that it would prosecute organizers and participants of a planned mass border crossing scheduled for August 15 [1]. Approximately 5,000 migrants remained in Ceuta following the earlier surge [1].
