Romanian police announced on Saturday that a body discovered in the Bucegi Mountain region is believed to be that of George Smyth, an 18-year-old geology student from the University of Bristol who went missing in November 2024 while hiking in Romania.[1] Smyth had been traveling from Poiana Brașov toward Bran when he disappeared in an extremely remote and isolated mountainous area.[1]
The discovery comes after months of search and rescue efforts involving Salvamont mountain rescue teams and Avon and Somerset Police.[1] Smyth's family has been informed of the findings and has received support from authorities, with the body expected to be returned to the United Kingdom following formal identification.[1] His family released a statement expressing their grief, saying: "We are all devastated by George's death. He was the best of us, and is deeply missed by his younger brothers, family and friends."[1]
