The system is designed to address limitations in the existing SMS-based emergency notification infrastructure. 2 According to Pat Hetherington, interim coordinator-general of the National Emergency Management Authority (Nema), the current system relies on standard SMS capability and has experienced significant delays during emergencies and disasters. 2 Federal Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain has characterized AusAlert as a "far superior" alternative. 2 The system was developed following recommendations from the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires royal commission and is scheduled for full deployment in October 2026. 2
The alert is designed to be loud enough to capture attention but quieter than a fire alarm. 2 Approximately 80 percent of Apple iPhones and around 1.6 million Android devices will receive the warning. 2 Compatible devices include iPhones 11 and newer running iOS 14.4 or higher, select Apple Watches, and Android devices running version 12 or later. 12
Domestic violence advocates and national emergency management agencies have advised individuals using hidden "safe phones" to power down their devices within 24 hours after the test to protect personal safety. 1 These individuals may alternatively turn off their phones one hour before and one hour after the test. 2
