Zhejiang Province has made significant strides in protecting biological diversity, with flagship species recovery serving as a testament to its ecological conservation efforts. The Chinese crested tern population now accounts for over 85% of the global population, representing a major conservation success [1]. The province has invested nearly 200 million yuan during the 14th Five-Year Plan period to conduct comprehensive biodiversity surveys, documenting a total of 13,634 species across multiple taxonomic groups [1].
The scope of Zhejiang's biodiversity work extends across diverse habitats and species types. Recorded species include 6,606 vascular plants, 4,663 terrestrial animals, 198 freshwater fish species, 121 marine fish species, 332 other aquatic organisms, and 1,714 macrofungi [1]. Beyond the crested tern, other species have experienced remarkable population rebounds: the crested ibis population has grown from 10 individuals two decades ago to 960 individuals, while the Putuo holly—once reduced to a single wild specimen—now numbers over 4,000 individuals in natural habitats [1]. The Baishanzu fir, similarly recovered from just three wild plants, has expanded to approximately 4,000 individuals [1].
To support this conservation framework, Zhejiang has established comprehensive protective infrastructure. The province has designated 36,700 square kilometers of ecological protection red lines and created a nature reserve system covering 14,700 square kilometers, making it the first province in China to complete the integrated optimization of natural protected areas [1]. The province has also developed 53 provincial biodiversity experience sites to promote public engagement with conservation efforts [1].
