China's coffee consumption market is experiencing rapid expansion, with the terminal market scale exceeding 200 billion yuan annually and growing at approximately 20 percent per year, according to Zhang Hong, president of the Asian Coffee Association, speaking at the 2026 Hainan International Coffee Expo [1]. This growth rate is roughly ten times the global average and is expected to sustain for another five to ten years [1].
Hainan's Free Trade Port is emerging as a crucial entry point for global coffee into China through the implementation of zero-tariff policies on coffee imports [1]. Since 2025, unroasted coffee and related products have been included in Hainan's free trade port raw materials and auxiliary materials zero-tariff list [1]. Additionally, processed products with value-added components exceeding 30 percent can enter the mainland market through the "second-line" mechanism while remaining exempt from import tariffs [1].
Major coffee-exporting nations are capitalizing on this opportunity. In the 2025-26 fiscal year, Ethiopia exported 47,836 tons of coffee to China valued at 347 million dollars, representing increases of approximately 40 percent in volume and 58 percent in value compared to the previous period, with China now ranking as Ethiopia's third-largest export market [1]. Over the past four years, Chinese imports of Colombian coffee have grown by approximately 105 percent [1].
