Europe's highest statue of the Virgin Mary has been unveiled in Konotopie, a small village in central Poland with fewer than 150 residents.[1] Standing 55.6 meters tall—including a 15-meter crown-shaped base—the monument surpasses the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro at 38 meters and Poland's own Christ the King statue in Swiebodzin at 52 meters.[1] The statue was inaugurated on Saturday and features an observation platform within its base.[1]
The memorial was financed by Polish businessman Roman Karkosiuk and his wife Grażyna Karkosiuk.[1] According to the couple, the statue was built as an expression of gratitude to God; Roman Karkosiuk had previously been ill.[1] Karkosiuk accumulated his wealth through investments in the Warsaw Stock Exchange, having made his fortune initially in plastic bottle manufacturing.[1]
