The Alice Springs community gathered on August 15 to farewell Kumanjayi Little Baby, a five-year-old Warlpiri girl who was found murdered following her disappearance from Old Timers town camp on April 30.[1] The funeral drew hundreds of mourners, with the community adorned in pink to honor the young girl who loved music, puppies, and the color pink.[1] A representative of her mother urged attendees to remember her "for who she was, and not just the tragedy of how her life ended."[1]
The case had sparked one of Northern Territory's largest search and rescue operations in history.[1] Jefferson Lewis, 47, was charged with her alleged murder.[1] Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited Alice Springs in May and referred to her as a "precious child."[1] The community displayed the Warlpiri concept of "Jintangka," meaning "we are all together, everyone united."[1] Maya Cifali, an 89-year-old long-time Alice Springs resident, reflected that this was the first time she had witnessed "such a strong sense of community spirit" of this magnitude.[1]
