Between June 29 and August 11, 2026, Sichuan's Yibin City experienced 35 earthquakes measuring 3.0 magnitude or higher, with epicenters concentrated near the border between Gaoxian and Zhenxian counties, characterized as a typical earthquake swarm sequence [1]. Nearly 80 percent of these tremors were classified as "perceptible earthquakes" ranging from magnitude 3 to 4.5 [1].
The most destructive event occurred on August 7, when a 4.9 magnitude earthquake in Gaoxian resulted in one fatality and six injuries [1]. An earlier and more powerful tremor struck on June 29 in Gaoxian's Shahe Township, registering 5.5 magnitude with a shallow depth of just 6 kilometers, injuring 15 people and damaging 933 households comprising 1,819 rooms with general damage, while 18 households sustained severe damage affecting 40 rooms [1]. By August 8, the seismic sequence from the 5.5 magnitude earthquake had generated eight additional earthquakes exceeding magnitude 4 [1].
According to Wang Tuo, director of the Chengdu High-Tech Earthquake Reduction Research Institute, "the destructive effects of earthquakes produce a cumulative impact—accumulating not only building damage but also the psychological pressure on residents from prolonged seismic activity" [1].
