A little penguin on Phillip Island has died from H5 avian influenza, marking a significant escalation in the disease's spread across Victoria.[1] The death was confirmed on Saturday afternoon by Victoria's Chief Veterinary Officer Graham Cook and Chief Biodiversity Officer James Todd.[1]
The H5 strain has been detected across multiple locations in the state, including Phillip Island, Mildura, Warnbool, Hamilton, Saint Andrews Beach, and Hawksdale.[1] In response to the mounting threat, authorities have launched an urgent vaccination program targeting more than 5,000 little penguins across Phillip Island and St Kilda Island.[1] Each bird requires two doses to achieve full immunity.[1]
James Todd acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating: "The death of the little penguin is concerning, but we are accelerating the vaccine rollout as quickly as possible."[1]
