The Ministry of Ecology and Environment, working jointly with the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate, has unveiled ten representative cases demonstrating progress in reforming China's ecological environment damage compensation system.[1] These cases span environmental pollution and ecological destruction across critical regions including the Yangtze River, Yellow River basins, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.[1]
The ten cases are distributed across three reform phases: two cases from the pilot stage (2015-2017), seven from the nationwide trial period (2018-2021), and one from the normalization phase beginning in 2022.[1] Together, they illustrate the collaborative framework between administrative and judicial authorities in addressing environmental harm. As of July 2026, jurisdictions nationwide have handled approximately 70,400 ecological environment damage compensation cases, with compensation amounts exceeding 35.5 billion yuan.[1] These developments reflect the core principle that "the environment has value and those responsible for damage must bear the cost."[1]
