A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Flores region on August 15, 2026, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).[1][2][7] The earthquake occurred at 5:58 a.m. local time and was centered approximately 68 kilometers north-northwest of Ende city in East Nusa Tenggara Province.[1][3][7] The earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers.[1][2][3] Multiple aftershocks were recorded following the main tremor.[5][6]
The earthquake triggered tsunami warnings in the region.[2][3][6] Indonesia's meteorological agency issued advisories urging residents to move away from beaches and riverbanks and seek higher ground.[3][4] Officials from Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency called for immediate evacuation of coastal populations.[4] The Australian Tsunami Warning Centre stated that the earthquake posed no tsunami threat to Australia's mainland, islands, or territories.[3][6] As of the initial reports, no casualties or damage had been confirmed.[2]
